College: Education and Human Services
Degree: Bachelor of Arts in Education
Major: Elementary Education
Concentration: Elementary Education (K-6)
Effective Term: Fall 2009
The Academic Roadmap provides a term-by-term sample schedule for each undergraduate academic program at the University of North Florida. It is designed to guide students in the selection of courses each term. The "Mile Marker" courses in the right-hand column are those courses that should be completed before or by the end of that term. Following the sample schedule, and completing the mile marker courses at the appropriate point of your undergraduate career, will facilitate graduation in four years. The term-by-term model assumes fulltime enrollment. For students enrolled part-time, the sample schedule and mile markers should be followed based on the number of credits completed. The Academic Roadmap should be used in consultation with an academic advisor.

The BAE in Elementary Education (K-6) prepares future educators by providing a broad foundation of observable and measurable competencies that contribute to their personal and professional growth. These competencies should enable the educators to assist learners to realize their full potential in ways which are meaningful and satisfying to the learners and which lead them to effective participation as members of society. Click on the Students tab of the Career Services webpage for major exploration and employment information.

Summer terms may be utilized to facilitate graduation in four years.

  • Visit Appendix B General Education Requirements for a complete list of university General Education courses. An Associate in Arts (AA) degree from a Florida public university, state college or community college satisfies UNF general education, College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) and Gordon Rule requirements. General Education Math selection for First Time in College (FTIC) students is contingent upon Math Placement exam results, SAT/ACT math scores, the student’s major and/or credit received through accelerated mechanisms (Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Dual Enrollment, etc). Elementary Education majors are encouraged to take MGF 1113 Math for Teachers I to satisfy 3 of the 6 semester hours of General Education Mathematics. Visit the Elementary Education (K-6) webpage for a complete list of Elementary Education prerequisites. All freshmen and sophomores (students with 0-59 credit hours) should consult their academic advisor in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) or the UNF Honors Program.

  • Admission into the College of Education and Human Services requires a minimum of 60 semester hours or a state of Florida AA degree with a grade point average of 2.50 or better and passing scores on all four parts of the General Knowledge (GK) test by Term 5. For more information visit the College of Education and Human Services Advising Office webpage.

  • A minimum grade of "C" is required in all course work.

  • When selecting Free Electives, students should consider courses in the Liberal-Arts. First Time in College (FTIC) and Lower Level transfer students should consult an Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) advisor for course recommendations.

  • Students must maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.50 or better for each semester they are enrolled in a teacher education program.

  • All students are subject to a thorough background check, and must submit finger prints.

  • All course work including successful completion of Field Labs I and II are prerequisites for Student Internship (Term 8). Courses with field lab requirements must be completed during fall and spring terms.

  • Passing the Professional Education and Subject Area exams of the Florida Teachers Certification Exam (FTCE) is required for graduation.

  • Students should refer to their personalized Degree Evaluation provided by an academic advisor and to other university resources for additional university and college-specific policies. Visit the undergraduate university catalog for more information.
